Academic Advising Graduate Intern (Vision and Call)

Vision & Call Internship Program:

The Vision & Call Internship Program is designed for recent college graduates enrolled in a Bushnell graduate program who are interested in and/or exploring a call to work in Christian higher education. This internship is a part-time, 10-month (August 1, 2024-May 31, 2025), grant-funded position.

 As part of this program, you can expect to:

  • Participate in meaningful, hands-on projects within the department that contribute to the mission of Bushnell University.
  • Develop knowledge, skills, and abilities in the field of Christian higher education.
  • Receive an $850 per month stipend and a $5000 graduate tuition benefit at Bushnell University.
  • Be supervised and mentored by an experienced leader who has over 10 years of experience in higher education.
  • Engage with senior administration, including members of the President’s Cabinet.
  • Be part of a cohort of interns and meet together on a weekly basis.
  • Receive individualized career coaching and mentorship in the exploration and clarification of your own vocation and calling.
  • Produce a professional development plan and portfolio to launch your career in higher education.
  • Attend a retreat with other Vision & Call Interns from around the nation (October 4-6, 2024). Attendance at the retreat is a mandatory component of participating this internship program.

Position Summary:

The Academic Advising Intern will primarily work with students who are considered traditional undergraduates (daytime, on campus students). They will work with the Academic Advising team to provide accurate and timely academic advising to students. This can include graduation planning, understanding degree requirements, course registration, and student success strategies. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in professional development activities including trainings through NACADA (National Academic Advising Association), athletic organizations, team and divisional meetings. 
  • Assist the Academic Advising staff in creating, promoting and implementing programming for group registrations. 
  •  Assist Academic Advisors in First Year Seminar courses teaching and projects. 
  • Assist Academic Advisors in registration duties including, preparations, degree audits and student registration appointments. 
  • Additional Advising learning opportunities that arise, after agreement between the Senior Director of Enrollment Services and the intern.

Experience and Qualification Requirements:

Recent college graduate or 1st year graduate student. Strong preference given to those enrolled in a Bushnell University graduate program.

  • Good standing with Bushnell University (e.g., academic, student conduct, financial)
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Effective communicator, both written and verbal, in interpersonal and public speaking settings
  • Positive and enthusiastic, builds rapport with a wide range of constituents
  • Collaborative team player with ability to work independently
  • Creative, resourceful, and flexible
  • Quick learner; committed to efficiency and accuracy
  • Self-motivated, dependable and reliable
  • Demonstrates a high level of professionalism
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Outlook
  • Familiarity with digital technology, databases, etc.

Working Conditions/Special Requirements:

  • Bushnell employees must have a maturing Christian faith and live in compliance with the duties and expectations as detailed in the Employee Handbook.

  • The employee must have knowledge of strong office management techniques; operations, procedures, specific rules and precedents of the office; research methods and report writing techniques; record-keeping techniques; operation of office machines including computer equipment and specified software; principles of training and providing work direction.
  • The position requires a strong ability to communicate effectively and succinctly, both verbally and in writing, utilizing tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Listening skills and the ability to speak and write clearly are essential to this position. Must possess exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • The employee must have high personal motivation, with great attention to detail and accuracy.
  • This person must project a positive, vibrant and professional attitude in assisting people.
  • This person must have high ethics of honesty and confidentiality, with a genuine and gracious presence pertaining to the students, faculty, staff and business of the department and the University.
  • This position may require lifting up to 25 lbs., as well as bending, stooping, kneeling.
  • This position may require evening and weekend hours on special occasions.
